What do vegans eat to stay healthy?

I am slowly but surely converting to be a vegan and I am not sure what to stay away from and what to eat. I know vegans dont eat any meat but what else DO they eat? As far as rice, fruit, yogurt, noodles, pastas etc? If anyone knows a website, food pyramid or anything for beginning vegans please let me know.

Are you sure you’re not talking about a vegetarian? Because vegans don’t just not eat meat. They don’t eat/drink butter, milk, eggs, ice cream, cheese, (meat obviously), and anything else that contains something that an animal makes, or its meat. That’s what a vegan is. So are you sure you’re not becoming a vegetarian?

My daughter is vegan, and I do try to ensure her diet is healthy- try falafel on pita bread with tahini (yum), peanut butter and jelly on vegan bread, hommus with just about anything, and cereals like kashi that are protein rich. Here are some tips:

    Step 1:
Limit your intake of prepackaged vegan foods. Make your own vegan burgers rather than buying frozen ones. Don’t eat vegan ice cream too often because it contains preservatives and additives.

    Step 2:
Incorporate rice and beans into your diet as much as possible. They’re versatile, vegan and economical. Rice and beans together form a complete protein and are packed with nutrients.

    Step 3:
Vary your choice of grains. Don’t eat oatmeal for breakfast every single morning. Eat rye, kasha or barley in addition to oats.

    Step 4:
Include ancient grains in your diet. Quinoa, millet, and amaranth are healthful and vitamin-packed.

    Step 5:
Take advantage of the vegetable tray in social settings. If you look hard enough, you’ll usually find vegan options.

    Step 6:
Use a variety of dairy-free milk products. Don’t use soy milk every day, since it can raise estrogen levels. Substitute rice milk, oat milk or almond milk.

    Step 7:
Opt for whole foods as much as possible. It’s possible to find foods with long ingredient lists that are actually vegan, but they’re not the healthiest choices. Don’t choose foods containing unhealthy ingredients, such as excessive sugars and bad fats, simply because they qualify as vegan.

    Step 8:
Purchase vegan margarine that doesn’t contain hydrogenated oils. Make sure you read the labels.

eat a balanced diet with lots of fruit and vegetables, and you can get protein from tofu and vegan meat.
make sure you take a vegan multivitamin daily.
it is specially formulated to keep vegans healthy.
anything you could possibly need to saty a healthy vegan you can find at your local whole foods.

    good luck.

take omega 3 fatty acids. eat beans, nuts, and legumes. try some middle eastern websites. i love falafel, chick pea recipes, tvp recipes (texturized vegetable protein). I make meatloaf, burgers, spaghetti sauces from these products and my family has no idea that they are not eating meat. Fantastic foods has a lot of mixes for protein dishes. the vegan world is larger than you think.

Wow, you got a ton of wrong answers at the beginning!

Obviously, you do not eat meat, eggs or dairy products, or anything with animal derived ingredients. This is really simple if you avoid processed and packaged foods.

Eat fruits, vegetables, beans, peas, legumes, nuts and seeds, rice and other grains, egg-less pastas, salads, soups etc.

There are tons of recipes online, check:
    http://www.vegweb.com/

And a good book to read would be “Vegan Freak” – it is both informative and amusing.

Did you know that people who are meat eaters, but later become Vegans (not lacto-ovo vegetarians because vegan by definition means no animal product consumption. That includes: eggs, milk, cheese, fish, etc.) actually have a high risk of cancer. But, those who are vegans and vegetarians all their life have the lowest risk of cancer. I would consider being a vegetarian and not a vegan. FYI…vegans cannot get vitamin b-12 from their diet because it’s only in animal products.

But being a vegetarian doesn’t mean you’ll turn into some scrawny hippy. You can get complete protein which meat has naturally by mixing vegetable sources of protein. Remember, proteins are amino acids and vegtable sources lack complete aminos.

type in vegetarian diets this tell alot about what you will eat and how much you need and things you should avoid.
facts for a good health and thing you will have to look for in foods, good luck

Vegans eat FOOD to stay healthy. Simple as that.
There is nothing super-magical about meat and animal by-products. Everything you need to survive can be found in plant sources. (except B12, but have you ever seen any fundraisers for B12 deficiencies? lol…no! You see those for diabetes, cancer, heart issues – all diseases and conditions that have been tied to large consumptions of meat).

I digress. We eat beans, legumes, fruit, vegetables, grains….etc. Contrary to the one poster who said that she ate eggs and yogurt, she was mis informed. Vegans do NOT eat dairy (eggs, cheese, milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, cream cheese, you get the idea). We also do not eat honey.

This site shows you how to set up your pantry:

This has a lot of good info:
    http://www.vegansclub.org/

I hope that helps! And welcome to veganism.

the same thing other health conscious people eat to stay healthy, minus the animal products. Vegetables, fruits, whole fortified grains, soy, beans, nuts, and if necessary, supplements.

Vegans do not eat meat or any other food of animal origin. We don’t eat slaughter byproducts like meat broths, lard, beef fat/tallow, gelatin or rennet, and we don’t eat dairy products, eggs or honey.

What we DO eat is fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices, oils and everything made from them. There is no one magic food we eat to stay healthy; variety is key. Just google vegan food pyramid and you’ll have your answer.
